British and European Standards state that there must be adequate measures in place to safeguard the occupants of a public or commercial building. When it comes to Emergency Lighting the standards are very specific, providing clear guidelines as to its implementation.

Emergency Lighting serves two purposes:

• To direct the occupants of a property to the designated exits during an evacuation
• To illuminate an area during power failure

Emergency Lighting is an addition to the normal lighting fixtures and is powered from either an ‘Emergency Generator’ or via ‘Back-up Batteries’. Battery systems come in two types; the first being a ‘Central Battery System’, which utilises batteries to power a number of lights. The second type can either be individual units housed within the existing light fixtures or a Self Contained unit complete with luminaires. The light for all these systems can be from almost any approved type lamp including: filament, fluorescent and LED. All these systems should conform to the relevant British (BS) or European (EU) Standards.

Emergency Lighting systems are individualised according to the specific requirements of the premises in question. Furthermore, areas within the premises must be fitted according to the specific circumstances. Certain locations will require units that only illuminate during a power failure whereas other locations may require permanent illumination. There are units that have two lamps, one for normal lighting and the other which will only activate during power failure. In all cases the Emergency Lighting units should have clear ‘direction’ or ‘exit’ signage either adjacent to the unit or on the unit itself. The Emergence Lighting system can be further enhanced by introducing phosphorescent signage, providing clear and improved indication of the designated exits.

Water proof Emergency Lighting units are also available, which must be installed at appropriate locations. Other environmental conditions may require the installation of ‘intrinsically safe’ units.

In some cases, it may be necessary for the Emergency Lighting to be automatically activated by the Fire Alarm during an Alarm condition.
